REMEMBER THE TUNER MAGS?
cOLLECTING MAGAZINES. USED CAR ADS. STAYING UP, PLANNING IT OUT.
When I was a teen growing up in a small town, there wasn’t much to do except drive around at night, hit up the 24-hour Walmart and diner, and sit outside of Sheetz while the older brothers and adults pulled up in their Civics. I was obsessed with Honda Civics, and collected Honda Tuner magazines planning all of the mods I would do when one day I finally had the cars of my dreams. The magazines also often had photos of autocross. One day, I’d strip a civic hatch down to its shell and autocross it (I thought). That desire quickly expanded to other Hondas - del Sol, CRX, Prelude, Integra… I quickly realized once I started working that dream would be shelved for several years and put it away in a cabinet of my mind.
I had all but forgotten of my obsession over my working years until 2021, when I was selling art at a local anime convention, and in came the itasha cars for display. The desire came flowing back out after years locked away. I became close with several members of the itasha group and started getting involved more in car events at anime cons. Through the con and cosplay scene I also met someone who has become one of my closest friends, who taught me to drive manual, and invited me to participate in autocross.
It has been 2 years since my first autocross event. I may not be the fastest - I’m almost always last in my class - but I am having fun. I started NOFUN as a way to celebrate the friendship, excitement, hard work, and passion of driving we have as car enthusiasts. It’s also about pushing our cars to their limits - in a safe way, no takeovers or swimming on public roads.
